Church Banners

Lately I attended the communion service in Cambridge in Magdalene College chapel. The support was abundant in Trinitarian worship, in a great, if overly brief, sermon and excellent hymns -centred prayers, in God that is elevated. As I shared and sat in the worship, this idea came to me,' How diverse Jesus Christ's church is.' Here I was in a somewhat large Anglican school chapel, a head to toe Westminster Calvinist as well as a certain Presbyterian. The seeming incongruity set me believing and below is the material of my thinking.

The Westminster Confession of Faith1 has a glorious chapter 'of the communion of the saints':

All saints, that are united to Jesus Christ their Head, by His spirit, and by faith, have fellowship with Him in His grace, sufferings, death, resurrection, and glory: and, being united to one another in love, they have communion in every others' gifts and graces, and are obliged to the performance of such duties, public and private, as do conduce to their mutual good, both in the inward and outward man . . . Which communion, as God offers opportunity, will be extended unto all those who, in every place, call upon the name of the Lord Jesus. (WCF 26)
It's only too possible to exclude almost, and also largely, in the communion of the saints, people and denominations who don't believe their idea. There are, obviously, foundational and non- gospel doctrines that are negotiable. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:1-3 of matters that are' of importance'. A heart is of truths that belong to the nature of the Christian religion. If people deny any of these core truths they exclude themselves from the communion of the saints. But whenever they believe these truths and trust the Saviour they are 'fam' and as fam and adopted must be recognized. They could have faulty perspectives of divine sovereignty, perhaps not understand the precedence of grace over religion, have doubtful perspectives of Genesis 1, have fantastical viewpoints of the end-times and boost the continuance of charismatic gifts; but whenever they maintain to Christ the Head, they're household. His blood has been shed by the Son for the Father and the Holy Spirit indwells them, when they has elected them, they're fam.

Family life might be problematic and, sadly, may be dysfunctional. But family is family however problematic and dysfunctional.

It really is a tremendous and searching test of our gospel devotion that individuals understand that God has his people everywhere, in what may seem to us the strangest of places, frequently. Accepting, recognising and embracing brothers and sisters in Christ, nevertheless different they may be from us, was something Jesus firmly impressed on his disciples. Mark 9:38-41 is certainly one of the most challenging episodes. The adherents saw a man casting out devils in Jesus' name, however they told him to cease, 'because he was not following us'. Jesus immediately rebuked his narrow- disciples, 'don't prevent him'. Whether this man wasn't one of them he could hardly be one! How miserable.

The moment we recognize the Christian religion with our specific church or denomination or confession of faith, that moment we become not an actual church of Jesus Christ and a sect. Not one of the means that we are never to attempt to correct our siblings and direct them into a more abundant, more biblical comprehension of the faith. No. It will mean that our default option is just not, 'They desire putting right', but, 'These are my fam, we are fighting under exactly the same banner, we're heading for the same divine nation, we are washed in exactly the same blood.'

The saints' communion is a valuable and profoundly biblical and God-honouring reality. In a famed letter John Calvin wrote:

This other thing also is to be rated one of the main evils of our time, viz., that the churches are so split, that human fellowship is scarcely currently in any repute among us, far less that Christian sex which all make a career of, but few genuinely practice . . . Hence it is that the physique the members of the Church being severed, lies haemorrhage. Does this concern me, if demand were, that, can i I be of any service, I would not grudge to cross even seas, due to it.
Occasionally family disagreements become public and there can be a great reason why. Most of the time family disagreements stay inside the household; not only because it is bad to clean your dirty linen in public. More importantly, God's blood-bought children should desire to please their divine Father along with the Saviour to whom they are combined by the Holy Spirit. Like all fathers, our heavenly Father wants to view his kids live in harmony. 'By this', said our Lord Jesus, 'will all men know that you are my disciples, that you love one another.'
